Dorrance (first name unknown), later known as Bane, is one of Batman's enemies. Bane is Batman's most powerul enemy due to a drug called Venom that increases his strength. Bane is most famous for breaking Batman's back and forcing him to give up crimefighting for months. Unlike most brutes seen in fiction, Bane is intelligent as well as powerful, making him a dangerous enemy.

History

As a young child, Bane was born inside the infamous jail known as Pena Duro, located in Santa Prisca. Serving the life sentence of his father, Bane spent his childhood and early life inside jail. Despite his conefinement, Bane's skills were improved. He read many books and would often increase his skills and work out at the prison gym, and practiced fighting in the cold, merciless jail. Bane found many teachers in his early life. He first killed at the age of eight, stabbing a criminal who tried to use him to find out how to escape the jail.

Bane considered his only friend to be Osito, a teddy bear whose name is spanish for "Little bear". Bane kept a knife inside Osito to stab anyone who picked on him. After several years, Bane was used as a test subject for the drug Venom, which killed the previous subjects. Bane was nearly killed as well, but survived and realized the Venom increased his physical strength. Bane needed to take the Venom every twelve hours or he would suffer side-effects.

Knightfall

Eventually, Bane escaped from Pena Duro and travelled to Gotham City, intent on defeating Batman. To test himself, he challenged Killer Croc to a fight and defeated him. Knowing that to challenge Batman directly would be foolish, Bane instead destroyed the walls of Arkham Asylum, releasing its inmates and allowing them to run amok in Gotham, forcing Batman to spend months rounding them up.

Bane soon became noticed among the criminal underworld. He later nearly killed Batman's sidekick Robin, but was forced to fight Killer Croc, who wanted revenge for their last encounter. Bane survived the fight, but his venom pumping machine was damaged in the process. He was later summoned to the Gotham Civic Center, where he recognized Bruce Wayne as Batman. With this knowledge, Bane ambushed a weakened Batman once he returned to the Batcave, overpowering him and breaking his back, crippling him. Having defeated Batman, Bane dumped Batman's broken body in Downtown Gotham, and left to establish his criminal empire.

Bane would meet his downfall soon afterwards, as Batman appointed Jean-Paul Valley, also known as Azrael, to serve as his replacement while he recovered. Jean-Paul, using an advanced upgrade suit, battled Bane and defeated him, leaving him wounded but alive.

Legacy

After recovering from his Venom addiction in prison, Bane returned to Gotham and allied with Batman to fight against a criminal ring distributing Venom to thugs. After defeating the ring, Bane declared a truce with Batman and left on a search for his father. During his search, he encountered Talia al Ghul, who introduced him to her father, Ra's al Ghul. Ra's, impressed by Bane, chose him to be his heir.

Together, the two launched a plague attack on Gotham, and Batman was forced to face Bane in combat once more, and managed to defeat him. Since then, the two became frequent enemies, having multiple battles with each other.

Veritas Liberat

During his quest to find his father, Bane came to the conclusion that Thomas Wayne was his biological father, and that he and Batman were brothers. Bane alerted Batman to this possibility, and stayed at Wayne Manor while DNA tests were performed. During this time, he also fought alongside Batman on the streets of Gotham. However, Bane eventually discovered that Thomas Wayne was not his father, and left Gotham to continue his search.

Bane eventually reunited with his father, the villainous King Snake, but was forced to battle him when he learned of his father's plan to unleash a powerful weapon upon the world. During the battle, Bane saved Batman from being shot by King Snake, but was wounded in the process. To save his life, Batman bathed him in the Lazarus Pit, and left him to pursue a more honest life.

Infinite Crisis & One Year Later

Bane returned to his homeland to stop the production of a new, more addicting strain of Venom and overthrow the drug lords' government. Upon learning that both Venom strains were derived from the chemist Rex Tyler, Bane vowed to kill him in revenge. He later participated in the Battle of Metropolis, where he murdered the hero Judomaster by breaking his back, similar to how he crippled Batman.

During the One Year Later continuity, Bane resumes his quest for vengeance against the Hourman, Rex and Rick Taylor. Approaching them with a request for help, Bane claimed that he had been captured by the drug lords and injected with the new Venom strain. Rick believed Bane and allowed him to approach his father for help, only for Bane to reveal that it was a ruse; he had actually killed the drug lords and now sought to take revenge on Rex by killing him, before forcing Rick to take the last strain of the Venom, leaving him an addict forever. However, the two managed to subdue Bane, leaving the mercenary buried under the rubble of the Santa Priscan penitentiary.

Bane later resurfaced in Santa Prisca, where he led the country in democratic elections. Upon learning the elections were rigged, Bane used his influence to enforce martial law, plunging the country into civil war. Bane was later defeated by Judomaster's son, Thomas Jagger, but was not killed.

Bane was later recruited by Amanda Waller to join the Suicide Squad and became addicted to Venom once more. However, he was betrayed by his fellow squad members and imprisoned on the prison planet, where he allied himself with Lex Luthor's faction against the Joker's faction. He attacks Thunder and Lightning when they attempted to feed Martian Manhunter.
