Full Name

Bathsheba Sherman

The Witch

Sacrifice her victims to the Devil, kill anyone who takes her land

Condemned to Hell

She's already gone, and now you're all gonna die.

Bathsheba Sherman is the main antagonist of The Conjuring. She is the evil spirit of an 1800's satanist who haunted the house in Harrisville, Rhode Island.

She was portrayed by Joseph Bishara.

Bathsheba was born in Harrisville, Rhode Island, where she grew up. At some point, she developed a devotion to Satan and demonic forces. She married a farmer and moved into his farmhouse, where she gave birth to an infant boy. When the boy was a week old, Bathsheba attempted to sacrifice the infant in a Satanic ritual. Upon being exposed by her husband, Bathsheba climbed atop a tree, where she proclaimed her love for Satan and cursed anyone who dared to take her land. She then hung herself.

After Bathsheba's death, her property was divided upon parcels. In spite of her death, her spirit lingered in the land, haunting whoever moved into the parcels. After a period of haunting the new owners, Bathsheba would kill them, either by possessing them to kill their families or forcing them to commit suicide.

The Conjuring

In 1971, Roger and Carolyn move into the dilapitated farmhouse with their five daughters Andrea, Nancy, Christine, Cindy and April. Shortly upon moving in, the family is haunted by Bathsheba's enraged spirit. Paranormal events occur in the house for the next few days, including the death of the family's dog, Sadie. Bathsheba targets the children of the family, first revealing herself to Christine and later attacking Andrea and Cindy while their mother is distracted by another spirit.

Carolyn contacts famous demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren, who agree to investigate the house for paranormal activity. After a thorough investigation, the Warrens single out Bathsheba as the spirit primarily responsible for tormenting the family, and conclude that the house may require an exorcism. They also learn of Bathsheba's history prior to her death.

Lorraine enters into the cellar through a secret passageway, where she encounters another spirit in the house. She is then attacked by Bathsheba's spirit, who promptly attacks Nancy as well and flings her around the house. The Perrons abandon the house and temporarily seek refuge at a hotel while the Warrens take their evidence to a Catholic Church to authorize an exorcism. Bathsheba, in retaliation, goes to the Warrens house and frees Annabelle, a demon trapped in a doll, and attacks the Warrens daughter Judy. Ed manages to save Judy before she is harmed, though.

Bathsheba possesses Carolyn and takes Christine and April back to the house to sacrifice them, but the Warrens pursue them. After tying up Carolyn, Ed decides to perform the exorcism himself. Bathsheba finally unveils her true form to those present and vows to kill them all before freeing herself from her binds. She then captures April and attempts to stab her with a pair of scissors. However, Lorraine manages to distract a possessed Carolyn by reminding her of a family memory she shared with her family, allowing Ed to complete the exorcism, banishing Bathsheba to Hell and saving the family.

  • The haunting portrayed in the film is based on the supposedly true events of the Perron family haunting. However, several events in the film differed from the alleged actual haunting.
  • Bathsheba, despite being female, was portrayed by a male actor.
