In the TV series, he was portrayed by actors Conan Stevens, Ian Whyte, and Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson.

HistoryEdit

BackstoryEdit

Gregor was known for his violence even from a young age. When he was around twelve years old, he held his brother Sandor's face against a fire in retaliation for playing with one of his discarded toys without his permission, leading to Sandor's facial scars. Throughout the years, numerous servants have gone missing in the Clegane household, apparently killed by Gregor in moments of rage. He is also rumored to have killed his father, sister, and wives. At the behest of Tywin Lannister, Gregor was knighted by Prince Rhaegar Targaryan.

One year later, during Robert's Rebellion, Gregor participated in the Sack of King's Landing, where he met Elia Martell and her children, Rhaenys and the infant Aegon. Gregor proceeded to brutally murder the two, slamming Aegon's head against the wall, before raping and murdering Elia.

Season 1Edit

Gregor is involved in the celebration of Eddard Stark's appointment as Hand of the King. During a joust, he horrifies the crowd by killing his opponent, Ser Hugh of the Vale. Later on, upon facing Ser Loras Tyrell, Gregor is enraged when he loses the joust, and is on the verge of killing Loras when Sandor intervenes and battles his elder brother. The fight is cut short when King Robert demands an end to the folly, to which a humiliated Gregor relents and leaves.

When Tyrion Lannister is taken into custody for the supposed attempted assassination of Prince Brandon Stark, Gregor is dispatched to the Riverlands in retaliation. This leads to numerous raids of villages, with its occupants being tortured and murdered en mass by Gregor's men. Eddard promptly declares Gregor a false knight and sentences him to death for his brutality, but the ruling is rendered null and void by Eddard's arrest and execution.

After Robb Stark's victory at the Whispering Woods, Lord Tywin commands Gregor to lead an invasion of the Riverlands in retaliation.

Season 2Edit

Leading the Lannister's army, Gregor leads a brutal war campaign against the Riverlands, raiding villages and selecting prisoners at random to be tortured for information. Lord Tywin joins Gregor's men during the campaign a day before schedule, interrupting Gregor during one of his torture sessions. Tywin puts a stop to the torture and orders that the prisoners be put to work instead.

Following the assassination of Ser Amory Lorch, Tywin fears that he was the intended target and, out of paranoia, orders Gregor to execute dozens of their own men. Gregor suggests that the assassin was a member of the Brotherhood Without Banners, and Tywin dispatches Gregor to the smallfolk of the Riverlands to pressure the residents into giving up the Brotherhood. Tywin then returns to the Westerlands.

Season 3Edit

When Robb Stark and his army arrive at Harrenhall, they discover that Gregor and his army have already executed the hundreds of prisoners, leaving their bodies to rot.

Gregor later participates in the Battle of Stone Mill against Lord Edmure Tully, Robb's uncle. His forces are defeated, forcing Gregor to retreat to Casterly Rot. Robb chastises his uncle, explaining he wanted to lure Gregor into the west and kill him there.
